After the establishment of the Burmese capital in Mandalay in 1857 by King Mindon, the Buddha images took on a more natural lifelike appearance. The images were distinctively characterized by the elaborate decorations. In this Buddha image, the bejeweled robes is lavishly draped over the Buddha’s left shoulder. The arms of the Buddha spread at the base following the curved edge of the robe. The right hand is in a gesture of an “Offering” mudra by holding a small piece of medicinal fruit. This mudra became increasingly popular at the turn of 20th century in Burma.
